As a parent I have always wanted to look out for the best interest of my children. During early 2022 I was particularly concerned about the state of mind of my youngest son Ben. As a young athlete had had shown exceptional talent as a middle-distance runner and as a junior footballer. However more recently his performances had gone backward, and he began to lose interest in sport which clearly impacted his life more broadly.

Michael began working with Ben in March 2023 and immediately had an impact on his approach to his sport and life in general. Over a 4-to-5-month period Ben had regular sessions with Michael and in this time, he learned a range of mental skills that he implemented into his sport. His performance in his football improved dramatically and as a result he was invited to the Sandringham Dragons, and he is currently training with them in preparation for the 2024 season.

Michael has been instrumental in providing guidance and support for Ben and I would recommend him to any athlete who is wishing to enhance their performance. In particular I would recommend him to junior athletes who are looking to transition to the next level of their chosen sport.

As a head of sport in a large private school it is always a challenge to find a way to communicate with a group of student athletes about the direction of their chosen sport and what is expected of them. Michael's initial role at Brighton Grammar was to work with the Boat Club to establish a purpose and vision for the future.

Michael was instrumental in supporting the 1st Eight over several years and worked both with individuals and the group to develop the mental skills that enabled the Boat Club to have sustained success over several years.

I first met Michael in 2022 when I was the Head Coach of Soccer at a Melbourne private school. We had many conversations about coaching styles and philosophies and subsequently I engaged as my personal mentor and performance coach. Over the past 12 months or so we have had both formal and informal discussions about the nature of coaching and how I can get the best out of my teams.

Over this time my effectiveness as a coached has improved significantly and I now have an ability to see the game of soccer from multiple perspectives and implement approaches that enhance the team’s culture and game style whilst managing the performance of individuals in my team both technically and mentally.

I would recommend Michael’s approach to leadership and coach development any young aspiring coach who is looking to take their coaching skills to another level.

Leadership and Coaching Development

Over the past few years Michael has been instrumental in designing and delivering the program that has reinvented sport at Wesley College.

Through his passion and commitment Michael went over and above what was required to support each of our 21 Head Coaches and worked closely with the coaches of our first teams.

During his time at Wesley, he also provided one on one sport performance coaching for many of our athletes in order for them to maximize their abilities through better mental skills application.

I have known Michael for many years and in that time, he has provided my athletes with the mental skills to perform to their maximum. This has been particularly important for those athletes that are preparing for National and International level competition.

More recently Michael has been involved with the Melbourne Swimming Club providing development sessions particularly for those athletes who are preparing for the Victorian State titles and National Titles coming up in April 2024.
